Join Us At The Jimmy!

Jimmy White Park at Kelleytown Stadium, aka The Jimmy, in Hartsville, SC is the host site for the annual Southeastern Baseball Classic.  The mission of the Southeastern Baseball Classic to promote the game of baseball, to enhance the lives of athletes through competition and scholarship, and to involve the community by assembling sportsmen in tournament play.  

"Join Us At The Jimmy" is a blog associated with the Southeastern Baseball Classic and its goal is to make people more aware of teams and players visiting Hartsville for the SBC, as well as introducing our guests to the traditions and uniqueness of our town and tournament. 

Team Capsule: Hartsville High School Red Foxes

The Hartsville Red Foxes are 10-4 and 6-2 in region play (at the time of this post).  With four region contests remaining and sitting atop the standings, Hartsville has its sights on the region crown.  For SBC week though, thoughts of a region championship will be put on hold.  There will be another title run on the minds of Red Fox players and coaches:  the elusive and illustrious SBC championship.

Led by all-around dynamo and the reigning co-statewide player of the year, Cam Cannarella, there is optimism that the Red Foxes could claim their first outright SBC title.  That's something that Mother Nature denied them the chance of in 2019, as Georgia Premier Academy and Hartsville claimed a split of the title after Friday's championship game was washed out.  

SBC Schedule for the Foxes:

• Thursday, April 21 vs. Paul VI at 7:30pm

The Red Foxes will also play on Friday, April 22. That game time and opponent will be determined by Tuesday-Thursday’s outcomes.

More about the Southeastern Baseball Classic: 

The Southeastern Baseball Classic is a high school baseball tournament held in Hartsville, typically during Spring Break.  For 2022, teams from Maryland, Virginia and Georgia, as well as from around South Carolina, will take part in the tournament.  Games will begin on Tuesday, April 19 and run through Friday, April 22.

Charismatic on the Mic: Don't Miss John Wall at the 2022 SBC!

In baseball, coaches love hard-working players who run out every ground ball and back-up every throw.  In baseball, coaches also love players with natural talent.  For generations, the natural abilities of players have left us in awe.  From the behemoth blasts of Babe Ruth to the sheer speed of Rickey Henderson and from the sweet swing of Ted Williams to the overpowering fastball of Aroldis Chapman, coaches and fans of the game have been mesmerized by players' natural talents.

At the SBC we have a similar talent to Williams and Ruth at the plate, Chapman on the bump and Rickey on the bases.  We have John Wall; a natural talent with the microphone in his hand.  His commentary and colorful narration throughout the week provide a unique experience for players, coaches and fans.

John, a fixture on the SBC Board since its inception in 1997, brings equal parts SVP, Bob Uecker and John Saunders when the mic is in his hand.  He's entertaining and spontaneous, yet relevant and insightful.  He's a fan of the game, knowledgeable of its nuances and, above all, loves the people who are involved with it.  John also does a great job of passing along the legend of Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen to younger generations who haven't been exposed to the "Woooooooo" in any of their previous YouTube searches.  

Without fail, every coach and player who comes to The Jimmy for the SBC, leaves with a friend named John Wall.  Don't miss him at the 2022 SBC.  Click here for the 2022 game schedule.

2022 SBC At-A-Glance

 

Below is a rundown of what to expect each day of the SBC!  Come join us at The Jimmy, 216 Clyde Road in Kelleytown!

What's Happening on Monday, April 18?

The official welcome and skills competitions will get underway at The Jimmy at 5:30pm.  The skills competitions will include the base-running competition and home run derby, as well as the Coaches' Fungo Challenge.  These events are free to attend. 

After the fun at the field, events will move over to the parking area near the football grandstand for the inaugural Ball Park Block Party.  This free concert will take place from 7-10pm.  Admission is free and food trucks will be onsite. You don't want to miss this concert!

What's Happening on Tuesday, April 19?

Games will start bright and early on Tuesday.  Georgia Premier and DeMatha will get things started at 9:30, with four games to follow.  

Prior to the 7:30pm game between Hartsville and Andrew Jackson, the tournament's opening ceremony will be held.  USC-Sumter Head Coach Tim Medlin will be the guest speaker and the 2022 Mark V. Raines Memorial Scholarship will be awarded.  

What's Happening on Wednesday, April 20?

On Wednesday, games will again begin at 9:30am.  Paul VI and South Florence, two teams that are very familiar with The Jimmy, will get things started.  

Prior to the start of the 7:30pm game between Hartsville and DeMatha, Coach-turned-Principal Corey Lewis and the 2007 State Champion Red Foxes will be honored. 

What's Happening on Thursday, April 21?

On Thursday, Trinity Collegiate and Andrew Jackson will get things started in the 9:30am contest. 

Teams will be fighting for a spot in Friday's championship game.  Throughout the day, the All-Academic Team for 2022 will be announced. 

What's Happening on Friday, April 22?

There will be five games at The Jimmy on Friday.  Outcomes from Tuesday-Thursday's games will determine the matchups.  The first game will be played at 10am.  The schedule will be posted on Thursday night.

From The Scottie to The Jimmy: Paul VI aims to claim 4th SBC Crown

Attempting to take home his team's fourth SBC crown in 2022, Paul VI Head Coach Billy Emerson is no stranger to The Jimmy. He's also no stranger to ball parks with catchy monikers. Emerson's Paul VI Panthers play their home games at Scott Eastment Memorial Park in Chantilly, VA. It's affectionately known as "The Scottie."

While Jimmy White Park is named for Hartsville's legendary headman, Coach Jimmy White, The Scottie is named for a legendary Panther player, Scott Eastment. A 2005 graduate of Paul VI, Eastment passed away in 2020, but his legacy will live on through the Panthers baseball program.

Eastment played on the 2004 state championship team at Paul VI. He finished his career in the top ten of 27 different statistical categories for the Panthers (including stats as varied as RBIs and Complete Games). He is one of only two players in Paul VI history to have 100 career hits and strike out 100 batters. After graduating from Paul VI, Eastment continued his baseball career at Frostburg State University.

At the dedication of The Scottie in 2021, Coach Emerson remarked, "Scottie was a talented competitor, a winner and a great teammate. Every time we take this field, we'll remember his energy. He's part of our family."

As Paul VI takes the field in what is essentially Emerson's home away from home (he coined "The Jimmy" as the name for Jimmy White Park circa 2018), Eastment's energy and competitive fire are sure to be present.

A Look at the 2022 PVI Panthers:

Emerson starts the 2022 season with over 300 career victories and he'll be striving to add four more during his time at The Jimmy. He'll also be trying to earn Paul VI's fourth SBC crown (2008, 2009, 2016).

Headlining Emerson's club are seven college commits, including a loaded class of 2024. Current Panther college commits are:

• Brendan Cecka (OF/RHP, 2022) - St. Mary's College
• Carlos Irizarry (INF, 2022) - Penn State-Harrisburg
• Owen Mead (RHP, 2022) - Marymount University
• Logan Eisenreich (RHP, 2024) - Virginia Tech
• Alex Peltier (OF, 2024) - East Carolina
• Tyler Rowling (MIF, 2024) - Penn State
• Jackson Sirois (MIF, 2024) - Virginia

The 2024 class for Paul VI also includes RHP/INF Tyler Russ. And if five Sophomore prospects weren't enough, the Panthers boast a pair of Freshmen stars in OF/RHP Alex Pearce and catcher Will Tighe.

Developing all this talent with Coach Emerson are assistants Mike Rowling and Michael Appleton.
