2019 SBC Team Rosters

Cavs' McCullum Will Feel at Home for the SBC

Robert E. Lee Academy's Jenkins McCullum will have a longer ride to school in the mornings than he will home from his games during the week of April 15.  McCullum and his Cavalier teammates will be participating in the 2019 Southeastern Baseball Classic at The Jimmy.  McCullum lives in Ashland, which is mere minutes from Kelleytown.

As McCullum makes his place in the pantheon of Robert E. Lee baseball legends that includes dominant pitchers Brian & Darren Adams, the longball launching slugger Chad Wilkes and current North Greenville University coach Tyler Jackson (among many others), it's worth noting the incredible accomplishments McCullum had as a youth player in Hartsville.

McCullum was a member of the 2013 Minor League and 2015 Majors Dixie Youth World Series Championship Teams at Hartsville Northern.  Among his teammates on those teams were current Hartsville players Owen Taylor and Roddi Morris. On those teams, McCullum was just as likely to hit a home run as he was shut a team down on the mound or make an outstanding play in the field.  His versatility was critical for the team's success as they ran through competition from all over the Southeast.

Jenkins familiarity with The Jimmy and Hartsville's team should make him feel right at home during the Southeastern Baseball Classic.

You can see Jenkins and his Cavalier teammates at the SBC:

Tuesday, April 16 vs. Georgia Premier at 1pm
Wednesday, April 17 vs. Hartsville at 6:15pm
Thursday, April 18 vs. Queen's Grant at 6:30pm
Friday, April 19 vs. Northwestern at 11am

Why We Call It The Jimmy

Locals know why we call it The Jimmy.  It's our responsibility to make sure our visitors do, too.

Officially, technically, however you want to say it, the Hartsville High School Red Fox Baseball Team plays at Jimmy White Park at Kelleytown Stadium.  Coach Jimmy White was the head of the Hartsville Baseball Program from 1975 to 2002.  During his tenure, Coach White won 519 games, 12 region titles and two state championships.  Coach White has also been instrumental in the Southeastern Baseball Classic since its inception in 1997.

It's customary for legendary coaches to have their names adorn spaces where their leadership was monumental.  Dean Smith has the Dean Dome.  There's Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium.  Coach K has Krzyzewskiville.  Coach White has The Jimmy.  It's as simple as that.

Reynolds has Georgia Premier Primed for SBC Competition

Coach Gene Reynolds and the Georgia Premier Sox will be making their inaugural SBC appearance in 2019.  Having played in prestigious tournaments all over the country, his players won't be intimidated by the deep fence and peculiar infield at The Jimmy. At the time of this post, the Sox had a record of 14-2 on the 2019 season.

Reynolds has an ace in the hole with high-profile pitcher Daniel Espino, an LSU-commit and likely top draft pick in the 2019 MLB draft.  The Sox aren't just a one trick pony though.  Pitchers Dylan Ross (RHP, Eastern Kentucky) and Andrew Washington (RHP, South Florida) are also D1 commits.  Outfielder Miles Bowen, INF/C Brandon Washington and 2B Dimerson Nunez are all high profile recruits as well.  With 18 seniors on the roster, Reynolds has the Sox poised to make some noise at The Jimmy.

Georgia Premier has four games scheduled during the SBC:

Tuesday, April 16 vs. Robert E. Lee Academy at 1pm
Wednesday, April 17 vs. Queen's Grant at 3:45pm
Thursday, April 18 vs. Northwestern at 4pm
Friday, April 19 vs. Hartsville at 2pm

Coach Walters, Northwestern Trojans to travel to The Jimmy for the 2019 SBC

Coach Mitch Walters will be bringing his young Northwestern Trojans to Hartsville for the 2019 Southeastern Baseball Classic.  Coming off of a 25-4 2018 season that saw his team run the table in Region play, Coach Walters 2019 team lacked experience heading into the season.  With the state playoffs beginning only one week after the SBC, lack of experience will no longer be a crutch the veteran coach allows his team to use.

That said, it's hard to deny the youth movement in Rock Hill.  An 8th grader and a 9th grader are in the team's starting nine and five underclassman are seeing regular playing time. Of the team's seven seniors, three are POs (pitchers only).  At the time of this post, the Trojans were 7-8 overall and 4-6 in region play.

Regardless of experience; regardless of overall record; any Northwestern team that steps foot on the field under the tutelage of Coach Walters will know the game and be prepared to play.  Georgia Premier (with its 18 seniors), Hartsville, Queen's Grant and Robert E. Lee Academy better be ready for the young Trojans.

Northwestern has 4 games at The Jimmy during the 2019 SBC:

Tuesday, April 16 vs. Hartsville High School at 3:45pm
Wednesday, April 17 vs. Queen's Grant at 1pm
Thursday, April 18 vs. Georgia Premier at 4pm
Friday, April 19 vs. Robert E. Lee Academy at 11am

Queen's Grant to make first visit to the SBC!

Coach Dan Kerr and his Queen's Grant High School Stallions will make their first trip to The Jimmy for the 2019 Southeastern Baseball Classic.  Located in Matthews, NC, Queen's Grant's baseball program is in its infancy compared to longtime Palmetto State powers Hartsville and Northwestern.  Don't let the program's lack of longevity fool you.  Coach Kerr and the Stallions will stampede into Kelleytown Stadium ready to write their own piece of SBC history.  Led by P/INF Bryce Gorospe, the Stallions finished as their conference runners-up in 2018 and had 5 players named all-conference.

Gorospe had a sensational 2018 season, hitting .421 with 12 doubles and 15 stolen bases.  On the mound, Gorospe was clocked in the low 90s, while racking up 35 Ks in 34 innings.

Queen's Grant has four games scheduled at The Jimmy:

Tuesday, April 16 vs. Hartsville at 6:45pm
Wednesday, April 17 vs. Northwestern at 1pm
Wednesday, April 17 vs. Georgia Premier at 3:45pm

Georgia Premier's Espino To Bring Heat to the SBC

Lots of young players idolize Mariano Rivera.  Nearly all young pitchers growing up in Panama list Rivera as their all-time favorite.  However, few have realistic expectations of playing on the same stage as Rivera.  For Georgia Premier's Daniel Espino, duplicating Rivera's path from Panama to the pros is, not only realistic, but right around the corner.

With a fastball clocked in the high 90s and a dynamic array of breaking and off-speed pitches, Espino, an LSU-commit, is expected to be drafted early in the first round of the 2019 MLB draft.  We're pleased to know that Espino's route to the draft brings him to The Jimmy.

While the number of Division 1 & 2 players to play in the Southeastern Baseball Classic is too numerous to name, the hype and anticipation that comes with Espino's visit in April 2019 hasn't been seen since the days of Corey Patterson (Cubs, 3rd overall pick in 1998) and Jordan Lyles (Astros, 1st round, 2008).

Espino and his Georgia Premier teammates have four games scheduled during the SBC:

Tuesday, April 16 vs. Robert E. Lee Academy at 1pm
Wednesday, April 17 vs. Queen's Grant at 3:45pm
Thursday, April 18 vs. Northwestern at 4pm
Friday, April 19 vs. Hartsville at 2pm

Dylan Adams to Throw Out First Pitch at The Jimmy on April 17

Dylan Adms with his parents, Mike & Jennifer

On Wednesday, April 17, Dylan Adams will join us at The Jimmy to throw out the first pitch prior to the Hartsville-REL game at 6:15pm.  Dylan was an instrumental part of two Dixie Youth World Series championship teams for Hartsville Northern.  Dylan's personal accomplishments during those runs led to his induction into the South Carolina Dixie Youth Hall of Fame.

On top of being a great baseball player, Dylan is just a great kid.  His family also has ties to the Southeastern Baseball Classic.  In 2018, they were the host family for Peter's Township (PA).

Off the field, Dylan is also a champion.  He's currently battling pediatric cancer and has become a hero to all of us.  His fight began this past Fall and he's been showing us all how to remain positive in the face of adversity and uncertainty every since.  Dylan, it is an honor for the SBC to have you be part of it.  We can't wait to see you at The Jimmy!

Charismatic on the Mic: Don't Miss John Wall at the 2019 SBC!

In baseball, coaches love hard-working players who run out every ground ball and back-up every throw.  In baseball, coaches also love players with natural talent.  For generations, the natural abilities of players have left us in awe.  From the behemoth blasts of Babe Ruth to the sheer speed of Rickey Henderson and from the sweet swing of Ted Williams to the overpowering fastball of Aroldis Chapman, coaches and fans of the game have been mesmerized by players' natural talents.

At the SBC we have a similar talent to Williams and Ruth at the plate, Chapman on the bump and Rickey on the bases.  We have John Wall; a natural talent with the microphone in his hand.  His commentary and colorful narration throughout the week provide a unique experience for players, coaches and fans.

John, a fixture on the SBC Board since its inception in 1997, brings equal parts SVP, Bob Uecker and John Saunders when the mic's in his hand.  He's entertaining, spontaneous, yet relevant, and insightful.  He's a fan of the game, knowledgeable of its nuances and, above all, loves the people who are involved with it.  John also does a great job of passing along the legend of Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen to younger generations who haven't been exposed to the "Woooooooo" in any of their previous YouTube searches.

Without fail, every coach and player who comes to The Jimmy for the SBC, leaves with a friend named John Wall.  Don't miss him at the 2019 SBC.  Click here for the 2019 game schedule.
