Raines Scholarship Recipient to be announced on April 16

From 1974 to 1976, Mark Raines was an outfielder and catcher for Coach Jimmy White’s Red Foxes.  In 2015 the world lost Mark’s physical presence too soon.  The Southeastern Baseball Classic is pleased to be one of the many wonderful things positively impacted by Mark’s legacy.  Chrisie Raines and Raines Hospitality have joined with the Southeastern Baseball Classic to honor Mark through the Mark Raines Scholarship, presented annually during the tournament.  The 2019 winner will be announced on Tuesday, April 16.

Without the generosity of Raines Hospitality, the Mark Raines Scholarship would not be possible.  We’d like sincerely thank Chrisie Raines, the Raines Family and Raines Hospitality.  You’ve turned your tragic loss into something positive for others.  We hope your generosity and kindness inspire the young people that play in our tournament, just as the members of our Board and community have been inspired by your actions.

Please join the SBC Board in welcoming Chrisie Raines to The Jimmy on Tuesday, April 16, for the announcement of the Mark Raines Scholarship recipient.

Who gave Jimmy White Park the name "The Jimmy?"

We held a Twitter poll to see who our social media friends thought coined the moniker "The Jimmy" for Jimmy White Park.  As you can see above, our Twitter followers feel like John Wall came up with nickname.  Surprisingly, Coach Adam Fedewa received the least number of votes (10% with 100% of precincts reporting).

Unfortunately, we have to break the news to our Twitter followers that they got it wrong.  It wasn't John Wall, though he has undoubtedly helped the name gain notoriety.

At this time, we can neither confirm, nor deny,
if Coach Emerson coined the name.
If it's not John, who is it?  Did Coach Fedewa come up with it?  He's certainly capable.  What about Coach Emerson from Paul VI?  What about Buster Freeman?  He's been known to talk.  And he knows his Hartsville sports history.  Surely, he'd appreciate the value in a unique name for the hallowed grounds of Kelleytown.

Did the Voice of the Red Foxes coin "The Jimmy?"

We've narrowed it down to three.  Who could it be? Join us at The Jimmy from April 15 to April 19 for the Southeastern Baseball Classic to find out!

Dave Schmotzer to speak at the 2019 SBC Opening Ceremony

Coach Jimmy White won't be the only local legend at 2019 Southeastern Baseball Classic with a field named after him.  Coach Dave Schmotzer, who led the Coker College (soon-to-be University) Cobras baseball program from its inception in 1992 to 2013, has the Cobras' field in downtown Hartsville named after him.  He'll also be the speaker at the Opening Ceremony for the 2019 Southeastern Baseball Classic.

During his tenure at Coker, Coach Dave won 652 games, seven conference titles and had two World Series appearances.  Obviously a winner on the field, Schmotzer's true legacy is the positive impact he's had on the lives everyone he comes in contact with, not just the players he coached.

The Opening Ceremony will begin at 6pm on Tuesday, April 16.
