Team Capsule: South Florence High School Bruins

Coach Kenny Gray's South Florence Bruin team had a season to remember in 2021.  Their 23-5 campaign included a remarkable 15-game winning streak, a Spring Break tournament championship, a region crown and what seemed like 10 Aydin Palmer no-hitters.

For 2022, the Bruins are prepared to follow up their success with another strong showing in a Spring Break tournament and are planning to defend their Region 6-4A championship.  Providing experience and leadership for the Bruins will be USC-Lancaster commit Stone Osbourne at first base and Florence Darlington Tech commit JR Williams in the outfield, as well as two uncommitted Seniors, SS/C Parker Winfield and 2B/P Jake Hardee.  These four Seniors will be joined by three dominant pitchers in Junior Luke Miller and his classmates, the aforementioned Aydin Palmer and Dylan Weigel.

South Florence also has a trio of head-turning Sophomores in Noah Moore (C/3B), Nathan Gause (OF/C) and Chandler Thompson (2B/P).

Coach Gray will be joined in the dugout by an army of assistants, including Rhodes Dickerson, Brandon Hyman, Trae Allison, Lindsey Robinson, Brian Brown and Terrance Scott.

SBC Schedule for the Bruins:

  • Tuesday, April 19 vs. Sumter at 2:30pm
  • Wednesday, April 20 vs. Paul VI at 9:30am
  • Thursday, April 21 vs. Georgia Premier at 5pm

The Bruins will also play on Friday, April 22.  That game time and opponent will be determined by Tuesday-Thursday’s outcomes.

Team Capsule: Paul VI Catholic School Panthers

Paul VI Head Coach Billy Emerson is no stranger to the Southeastern Baseball Classic.  It's hard to imagine the SBC without the Panthers; And after 16 seasons at the helm, it's hard to imagine the Panthers without Billy Emerson.

Emerson starts the 2022 season with over 300 career victories and he'll be striving to add four more during his time at The Jimmy.  He'll also be trying to earn Paul VI's fourth SBC crown (2008, 2009, 2016).

Headlining Emerson's club are seven college commits, including a loaded class of 2024.  Current Panther college commits are:

  • Brendan Cecka (OF/RHP, 2022) - St. Mary's College

  • Owen Mead (RHP, 2022) - Marymount University

Team Capsule: Trinity Collegiate School Titans

Coach Mike Rogers' Trinity Titans had a historic season in 2021, finishing with a school-record 21 wins and advancing to the SCISAA 3A upper state finals.  One thing is for sure; they'll be looking to one-up last year's squad in 2022.

While no small task, outpacing their 2021 performance is not unrealistic.  The Titans are led by Junior righty Tanner Hall and his battery mate, Florence Darlington Tech commit Garrett Keen.  Also providing a boost on the field and leadership in the dugout for the Titans will be Senior first basemen Dalton Moody.  Underclassmen on the rise for Titans are Junior Mac Faile and Sophomore Nicholas Romanoli.

In addition to the hard-throwing Hall, the Trinity has a long list of arms to move from around the field, including: Freshman Hunter White; Sophomores Dewsy Meadows, Jay Riddle, Gates Chapman, Pierce Evans and Romanoli; Juniors Branton Goodwin and Joseph Perkins; and Seniors Cam Jordan and Bennett Meadows.

Rounding out the Titan roster are their anchor in the outfield, Kam Rheuark, catcher Tannor Buck, outfielder Andrew Dameron and first baseman Tucker Galloway.

Joining Coach Rogers in the dugout for the SBC will be Coach Derick Urquhart, Keshaun Samuel, Booie Olson and Brody Justice.

SBC Schedule for the Titans:
  • Tuesday, April 19 vs. Buford at 5pm
  • Wednesday, April 20 vs. Sumter at 5pm
  • Thursday, April 21 vs. Andrew Jackson at 9:30am
The Titans will also play on Friday, April 22. That game time and opponent will be determined by Tuesday-Thursday’s outcomes.

Team Capsule: DeMatha Catholic School Stags

With COVID cutting their 2020 and 2021 seasons short, the DeMatha Stags are anxious to trot into The Jimmy again.  That's right, again.  This will be DeMatha's second appearance in the Southeastern Baseball Classic.  Their initial journey from Maryland to Hartsville took place in 2007.

DeMatha is led by Coach Steve Miller, while only in his third season with the Stags, will also be making a return trip to Hartsville.  Miller coached at Archbishop-Spalding during their 2010 appearance in the SBC.

A national power in several sports, DeMatha's 2022 baseball team will be led by four college commits, including George Baker (Louisville).  In addition to Baker, Tyson Nercessian (McDaniel College), Brendan Thomas (Alvernia College) and Brody Lindsey (Montgomery College) have plans of playing at the next level.

Heading into the 2022 season, Coach Miller boasts one of the more impressive career coaching records you will ever see:  177-47.  That's a winning percentage of .790.  Joining Miller and the DeMatha players for their trip to Hartsville will be:  Assistant Coach Mike Toomey, Managers Lawrence Chinhakwe, and Chris Czado, Athletic Trainer Adrienne Faircloth and Athletic Director Ed King.

SBC Schedule for the Stags:
  • Tuesday, April 19 vs. Georgia Premier at 9:30
  • Wednesday, April 20 vs. Hartsville at 7:30pm

Team Capsule: Buford High School Yellow Jackets

Coach Hank Harris and the Buford Yellow Jackets are no strangers to The Jimmy.  Over the past few years, whether it was Legion ball in the summer or regular season play, the Yellow Jackets have made several trips to Hartsville.  However, this will be their first taste of the Southeastern Baseball Classic.

Coach Harris’ team was off to a hot 5-1 start in the pandemic shortened season of 2020.  The Yellow Jackets made the playoffs in 2021 and are set to challenge rival Andrew Jackson for their region crown this year.

The Yellow Jackets are led by senior Lander-commit Landon Deese.  The infielder/pitcher headlines a young squad that features four seniors, five juniors and seven sophomores.  In addition to Deese, seniors Austin Blackmon, Jarrett Laney and Noah Rabon, as well as Junior Catcher Brody Sanders, will be looked to as major contributors for Harris’ team during the SBC.  Sophomore infielder/pitcher Eli Sistare will be joined by classmates Hunter Gainey and Tanner Sellers in seeing significant action for the Yellow Jackets.

Coach Harris is joined by assistants Jay Stickney, Jason Sanders and Christian Joplin.

SBC Schedule for the Yellow Jackets:

  • Tuesday, April 19 vs. Trinity Collegiate at 5pm
  • Wednesday, April 20 vs. Georgia Premier at Noon
  • Thursday, April 21 vs. DeMatha at Noon

The Yellow Jackets will also play on Friday, April 22.  That game time and opponent will be determined by Tuesday-Thursday’s outcomes.

Team Capsule: Andrew Jackson High School Volunteers

According to the Andrew Jackson Volunteers, the road to the Southeastern Baseball Championship goes one of two ways:  through Bethune or through McBee.  Those are the choices Coach Mike Lucas’ bus driver will have to make as the Volunteers make the trip from Kershaw to Hartsville.

Don’t let the rural ride fool you.  The Volunteers are poised to make some noise, not just at the SBC, but at the statewide level.  Coming off a 25-9 season and a Lower State Championship in 2021, Andrew Jackson has been picked by the South Carolina Baseball Coaches’ Association and Diamond Prospects to win the 2022 2A State Championship.

Looking at their roster, there’s reason to believe Andrew Jackson will be in the running for both the SBC crown and a state championship.  The Volunteers are led by Chapel Hill-commit Kyle Percival.  The hard-throwing lefty is the #4 ranked southpaw in the state for the class of ‘22 by Diamond Prospects.  Following Percival on the bump is another senior and Spartanburg Methodist-commit, Ashton Phillips.  Percival and Phillips will be throwing to the overall top-ranked player in South Carolina for the class of ’25 by both the Prep Baseball Report (PBR) and Diamond Prospects, Skyler Hegler.  Hegler, who is also ranked as the 49th best player in the country for the class of ’25 by PBR, has committed to continue his playing career at Clemson.

Shortstop Landon Peavy ’23 and Outfielder Bryce Helms ’22 are additional players to watch for the Volunteers.  Peavy is the third ranked shortstop in his class by Diamond Prospects.  Helms has committed to play at Spartanburg Methodist next season.

Coach Mike Lucas is in his 13th season at Andrew Jackson.  He started the 2022 season with 163 career wins and will be looking to add to that total during his team’s stay in Hartsville.  Lucas is joined by assistants Kolby Whitley, Jimmy Jackson and Tommy Wrape.

SBC Schedule for the Volunteers:

  • Tuesday, April 19 vs. Hartsville at 7:30pm
  • Wednesday, April 20 vs. Georgia Premier at 2:30pm
  • Thursday, April 21 vs. Trinity Collegiate at 9:30am

The Volunteers will also play on Friday, April 22.  That game time and opponent will be determined by Tuesday-Thursday’s outcomes.
