This Week in Red Fox Baseball (3.15.20)

This Week in Red Fox Baseball....

High school and middle school baseball is now on hold due to precautions related to the COVID-19 pandemic.  We will post updates about reconvening the season as decisions are made.

Additionally, an announcement about the 2020 Southeastern Baseball Classic will be made by Friday, March 20.

The Week That Was in Red Fox Baseball....

Tate Hawkins and the Red Foxes are 2-0 after one week of regular season play.
Overall, the three Red Fox teams went 10-2 in the first week of the regular season.  Coach Gainey and the Varsity squad opening the regular season on Tuesday, March 10, with a huge 11-0 win over Myrtle Beach.  Mykal Mack got the win on the bump.  Cam Cannarella's sweet swing continued its dominance from the preseason with 5 RBIs.

The Varsity was back in action on Friday for their home opener.  The Bulldogs of Marlboro County came to Kelleytown for a game being played in the shadows of rumors of school district shutdowns and season abbreviation.  Owen Taylor wasn't distracted.  Taylor picked up the win on the mound and hit a monster 2-run shot to left..  The final was 13-2.

Ashani McFarland had two extra-base hits (2B, 3B) against the Bulldogs.  DP Pendergrass and Mykal Mack both had 3 hits for the Foxes.  If high school sports are inf act  headed to a break in play due to the coronavirus, Red Fox Head Coach Tony Gainey would be temporarily stranded on 199 career wins.

Andrew Askins made two appearances on the mound for the
JV Foxes during the opening week of the regular season.
In JV action, the team kicked off the regular season with a doubleheader on Wednesday against South Florence.  Their hot play from the Pee Dee Invitational was momentarily thwarted, as they dropped the opener to the Bruins, 4-2.  The Foxes bounced back in game 2 with a 9-4 win.
Tree McFarland hit a three-run homer against Marlboro County.
After playing two on Wednesday, the JV Foxes were back at it on Thursday against Marlboro County in Bennettsville.  The standout from the Foxes 16-1 win was 8th grader Treion McFarland.  McFarland threw out or back picked 4 Bulldog runners and crushed a 3-run homer to break the game open for the Foxes.

On Saturday, Coach Starr's Foxes hosted West Florence for a doubleheader at The Jimmy.  Just like their first doubleheader of the season, the Foxes dropped the first one before winning the second half of the twinbill.  Game 1 was 7-5.  Game 2 was 8-7.

The 2020 HMS Foxes
Coach Austin's Middle School Foxes had a big week, going 5-0 and capturing their fifth consecutive Rawtown Rumble Championship.  On Monday, the youngsters hit the road to play Williams at Wilson High School.  The Foxes wasted no time taking control of the game, scoring 8 runs in the first.  The final was 17-1.  Drew Andrews got the win on the bump.

On Thursday, the MS Foxes opened play in Cheraw's annual Rawtown Rumble.  The Foxes defeated Andrew Jackson, 11-0.  Gage McKenzie got the win.  Evan Young and Mac Buchanan relieved McKenzie on the mound.

On Saturday, the MS Foxes traveled back to Cheraw to finish out the Rawtown Rumble.  They defeated Wallace, 11-0, McBee, 10-0, and Southside, 7-2, to win the tournament title.  Drew Andrews, Dewsy Meadows and Quez Hadley picked up wins for the Foxes.
